Margin is built around a simple promise: the notes you capture stay on your device.
No analytics, no servers of ours, no third-party tracking. Below is exactly what
happens with your data.
What Margin collects
Voice recordings. When you press and hold to capture a note, your microphone records audio. The audio file is saved locally to your device's storage and never uploaded to any server we operate.
Transcripts. Your voice notes are transcribed using Apple's on-device Speech Recognition framework. The transcription happens locally on your iPhone; the audio is not sent to Apple's servers (unless you have on-device recognition disabled in iOS settings).
Spotify access tokens. If you connect Spotify, Margin stores the OAuth access and refresh tokens locally on your device so the app can detect what's playing and control playback. We never see or store your Spotify password or your listening history on our side.
App settings. Your preferences (auto-pause toggle, note offset, etc.) are stored locally in iOS UserDefaults.
What Margin does not collect
We do not run any servers that receive your data.
We do not use third-party analytics (no Google Analytics, Mixpanel, Amplitude, etc.).
We do not use third-party crash reporters (we rely on Apple's own anonymous crash reports via App Store Connect, which you can opt out of in iOS Settings).
We do not sell, share, or rent any user data to anyone.
We do not track you across other apps or websites.
Spotify integration
When you connect Spotify, Margin uses Spotify's official Web API to:
Detect what podcast you're currently playing
Pause playback when you start a voice note
Resume playback when you finish
Seek to specific timestamps when you tap "Jump" on a saved note
These API calls are made directly from your device to Spotify's servers using
your Spotify account's authorization. Spotify's privacy policy applies to that
data exchange — review it at spotify.com/legal/privacy-policy.
iCloud and device backup
If you have iCloud Backup enabled on your iPhone, your Margin notes may be
included in your iCloud Backup along with the rest of your app data. This is
standard iOS behavior — Apple's backup encryption applies. We do not store
anything in iCloud ourselves.
Children's privacy
Margin is intended for users aged 13 and older. We do not knowingly collect
information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
If we materially change how Margin handles data, we will update this page
and note the change at the top. Continued use of Margin after such updates
constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
